This intensive workshop will cover technique, method, and application of the traditional Japanese folk art Shibori indigo dyeing and Sashiko embroidery. We will cover complex binding styles beyond basic Shibori folding. We’ll experiment with creating patterns through centuries-old binding and color resist techniques, brew a vat of indigo dye, and set the dye. We will finish pieces with sashiko stitching, a traditional embroidery method, creating simple geometric patterns that are not only pleasing to the eye, but functional in strengthening material. The end product will be a beautiful fiber arts piece of Shibori made with a linen panel that will be Shibori-dyed and Sashiko-stitched in your own design. It can be mounted as a wall hanging, used as a tabletop display, or utilized in another textile project. In addition, gain the knowledge and skills to continue your exploration of indigo dyeing and Shibori and Sashiko techniques at home! This class is geared toward students who have already taken the Intro to Shibori class, or have some experience working with the medium. We will be spending a lot of time planning and preparing our material, but students are welcome to use their indigo and time to dye any additional projects.
